What is OT?

'OT' or Occupational Therapy is a client centred health profession that enables people to do the things they love and need to do.

Participating in meaningful 'occupation' is crucial to both physical and mental health.

Occupations can look different for each individual and that's where we focus on what matters most to your child and your family. An occupation may be a child being able to play collaboratively with their friends or practicing social skills. It may be taking part in a sport, learning to tie your shoelaces or learning to the best of your ability at school.

OT's are trained to look at ways to facilitate these things specific to each and every individual.

Is play an occupation?

Absolutely! Play is a child's most important occupation!

Play is how children learn, how they develop their physical, social, cognitive, independence and emotional regulation skills. As occupational therapists it is essential that our sessions are meaningful to the child, fun and play based.

Who might benefit from seeing an OT?

OTs often see children that have been diagnosed with conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorders, Intellectual Disability, Cerebral Palsy or Down syndrome.

Additionally, some children may not have been diagnosed with a condition but have delays or difficulty carrying out skills in the same way that their peers can such as:

- Fine motor skills (e.g. holding a pencil and drawing a picture).

- Gross motor skills (e.g. being able to kick a ball)

- Emotional regulation skills (e.g. being able to manage emotions at an age expected level)

- Sensory processing (e.g. being able to tolerate busy and loud environments)

- Independence skills (e.g. learning to put a t-shirt on)

- Social skills (e.g. being able to play collaboratively with others)
